What is a computer network?

A computer network can be described as a group of computers that are connected together. It allows devices to communicate with one another. Data links allow information to be transferred between computers connected via networks. The connections between nodes are made using wireless or cable media. The Internet is the best example of a computer network. It's impossible to imagine a world without blogs, email, chat, newspapers online, and other online-based services. The basis of IT communication is computer networks. They can be used in many ways and include a variety of network types.




Different types of computer networks

There are many computer networks. They can be classified according to the size of their use and purpose. To determine the size of networks, it may be possible to use the geographical location and number of computers in the network. It can be as small as one computer in a single room, or as large and distributed as many as millions of devices all around the globe.

There are three types of computer networks.

Local Area Network

A local area network (LAN), refers to a group or computers that are connected within the walls of an apartment, hospital, or institution. The network's local connection is not available to the outside world so data cannot be accessed via the internet.

Metropolitan Area Network.

Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) offer greater coverage than LANs. Different LANs can be connected via telephone lines that make up the metropolitan area network. Metropolitan area networks are larger than local area networks. They are however smaller than the broad area networks (WAN). Networking in a town or city is one example.

Wide Area Network

The WAN (Wide Area Network) is another network that allows long-distance data transmission. It covers a wider area than the LAN or MAN. A WAN can be any country or continent. An Internet connection is the most common example of a WAN.
