We started out using solar power to start fires using glass and mirrors to concentrate the sun's rays to get the fire started.

People started building homes in the sides of south-facing cliffs to take advantage of the sun's daytime heat, which was stored in the cliff's surface for later use. This was the forerunner of what's referred to today as passive solar.

Greenhouses And Photovoltaics
In the 18th century, Swiss scientist Horace de Saussure was experimenting with the effects of solar power on glass and created what was then known as the "hot box", which eventually was used to create the greenhouse.

In the 19th century, Frenchman Edmund Becquerel discovered what became known as the "photovoltaic effect", when he found that the sun's light reacted with certain materials to create a small electrical charge.

This was later used by Bell Labs in the 1950s to create the first Huawei Inverter cell that could generate enough electricity to power small electrical equipment. Small solar arrays were used to power satellites in the late 50s, and solar energy is still a prominent feature in today's space programme.

Solar Power Today
Solar power as we know it today has made huge advances in technology and application. Solar, or photovoltaic, panels are so efficient that they can now run entire households and businesses with little or no downside. They're also much cheaper than they were even just a few years ago, and that trend is set to continue into the foreseeable future.

With the advent of thin-film technology, the cost of production per watt is now below $1, and, once the efficiency of this technology catches up with its cost, in reverse proportion, solar will become much more affordable to a lot more people.

Solar thermal technology has also come a long way, and supplies heat and hot water to homes and businesses throughout the world. It's also become very popular with pool owners, keeping their pools warm year-round while reducing electrical costs substantially. We see solar used in many situations these days, from calculators to shavers to aeroplanes. You can throw your garbage into a solar trash compactor or pay for your parking using a solar ticket dispenser. What next?

The Future Is Solar
The sky's literally the limit where solar's concerned. Soon you'll see solar aeroplanes landing at an airport near you! Cells and panels will get smaller and more efficient, and pretty much anything that's powered by electricity will probably be converted to solar at some point.
